Jasmine

Jasmine

The Jasmine of Syria, Maple of Canada and Trillium of Ontario were the first pieces created for this collection. They were borne of overwhelm turned to resolve.

When I am with my Syrian friends – sharing their joy and their toil, their love for family and food and fun – I feel I am home. It doesn’t matter we don’t share the same mother tongue or cooking methods or familiar dance steps or religious traditions; we are the same.

Which means that their family in Syria is my family in Syria.

Which means that every cell-phone message sent home – every delayed text, every long dial tone – is my breath being held. Those are my fears waiting on the line.

One hundred percent of the proceeds of these pieces – Jasmine, Maple, Trillium – will be given to Welcome Project Syria in Goderich and turned over to our refugees. To show them I’m with them.
